ITBC & THE NATURE CONSERVANCY
The Nature Conservancy stewards and is stewarded by over 7,000 buffalo (also known as the American Bison) across 11 preserves. To maintain the ecological health of the herds and their ecosystems, as herds grow, each year hundreds of buffalo need new homes. Since 2020, through the leadership of and partnership with the InterTribal Buffalo Council, TNC's Buffalo Restoration Program has returned over 1,300 buffalo to ITBC Member Nations, their original stewards, throughout their ancestral homelands, with hundreds more anticipated to journey home over this upcoming fall and winter. As this Indigenous-led movement continues to grow The Nature Conservancy is committed to co-creating new ways of doing conservation, outside of strictly buffalo transfers, through an approach rooted in right relations with ITBC and other Indigenous partners, the Earth, and all of its inhabitants.
